NASA astronaut Anil Menon has begun an eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Notably, he is an Indian-origin American astronaut. He launched with two Russian cosmonauts aboard a Soyuz spacecraft. Moreover, the launch took place from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Purpose of the Mission
During the mission, Menon will run many scientific experiments. These aim to prepare humanity for future deep-space travel. Also, they will advance technologies that can help life on Earth. Thus, the mission links space science with daily life.
Menon’s Unique Role
Anil Menon is a physician. Specifically, he specialises in emergency medicine and aerospace medicine. So, he will serve not only as a researcher but also as a test subject. In other words, doctors will study how long stays in space affect his body. Such data will help plan long missions to the Moon and Mars.
About Anil Menon
Menon was born in Minneapolis, USA. His father has roots in Kerala, India. Earlier, he served as a flight surgeon at SpaceX and NASA. Then, NASA selected him as an astronaut in 2021.
Indian-Origin Astronauts
Several astronauts of Indian origin have flown to space. For example, Kalpana Chawla flew on the Space Shuttle. Similarly, Sunita Williams has spent long periods on the ISS. Meanwhile, Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian citizen in space in 1984. Also, Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to visit the ISS in 2025.
About the International Space Station
The ISS orbits Earth at about 400 km. The US, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada run it together. Also, astronauts have lived on it continuously since 2000.
