Bhagirath App: 4,660 Springs Mapped in Uttarakhand, 1,174 Losing Water Flow

Bhagirath App spring mapping campaign in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand has involved villagers in saving its natural water sources. Through the Bhagirath App, villagers have mapped thousands of springs. Notably, the campaign runs under the theme “Dhara Mera, Naula Mera, Gaon Mera, Prayas Mera”. In short, it means “My stream, my naula, my village, my effort”.

What the Bhagirath App Survey Found

So far, villagers have marked 4,660 water sources on the app. Also, the survey identified sources where water flow is falling. Worryingly, 1,174 of these sources show less than 20 per cent of normal flow. Clearly, many springs in the hills are drying up.

Why Springs Matter in Uttarakhand

Most hill villages depend on springs for drinking water. Locally, people call these sources dhara, naula and gadhera. A naula is a traditional stone-lined step well that collects spring water. Meanwhile, a dhara is a spring outlet, often with a spout.

However, springs across the Himalayas are under stress. For instance, falling rainfall, deforestation and construction affect their recharge. Moreover, climate change is making the problem worse. Consequently, many villages now face water shortages in summer.

Role of People in the Campaign

The Bhagirath App lets common people report and map local water sources. Therefore, the state gets real data from the ground. In turn, officials can plan recharge work where it matters most. Above all, the campaign builds a sense of ownership among villagers.

Link With SARA

This effort connects with the work of the Spring and River Rejuvenation Authority (SARA). SARA works under the state’s Watershed Management Department. Notably, it plans treatment of springs and rivers using scientific methods. For example, it promotes recharge pits, trenches and tree planting in catchment areas.

Key Facts for Revision

Why the Bhagirath App Matters for UKPSC

Notably, water conservation is a key topic in UKPSC prelims and mains. So, remember the app’s name, theme and figures. Also, revise traditional water systems like naula and dhara.
