India hosted the eighth BRICS Youth Energy Summit in August 2026. Notably, the event took place under India’s BRICS Chairship for 2026. Moreover, it came just weeks before the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Clearly, India wants young people at the centre of energy cooperation.
About the BRICS Youth Energy Summit
The BRICS Youth Energy Summit is an annual youth platform on energy cooperation. It was first held in 2018. In fact, it grew out of the BRICS Youth Energy initiative launched in 2015. Today, the BRICS Youth Energy Agency supports this platform.
Highlights of the 2026 Edition
The summit opened online on 17 August 2026. After that, in-person meetings followed in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Also, more than 100 participants joined from BRICS countries. They came from universities, government bodies and energy ministries. In addition, groups like the International Solar Alliance and IRENA took part.
Theme and Priority Areas
India’s BRICS theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. Meanwhile, the energy track used the motto “Sarvesham Urjam”, meaning “Energy for All”. The summit focused on three priority areas:
- Energy security and sustainability
- Energy access and equity
- Technology and innovation
Furthermore, delegates discussed supply chain resilience, new ways of financing and grid digitalisation.
Why Youth Matter in Energy Policy
Young people will live with today’s energy choices for decades. Therefore, their ideas on clean energy and climate action carry real weight. Also, youth bring fresh thinking on startups, digital grids and green jobs. So, platforms like this help shape long-term cooperation.
Link With the BRICS Summit 2026
The youth summit formed part of a long series of BRICS meetings in India. Later, India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on 12–13 September 2026. Thus, the energy track fed into the wider summit agenda.
