TARA Glide Weapon: DRDO and IAF Conduct Maiden Flight Trial Off Odisha Coast

Maiden flight trial of the TARA glide weapon by DRDO and the IAF off Odisha

DRDO and the Indian Air Force have tested the TARA glide weapon for the first time. The maiden flight trial took place off the coast of Odisha on 7 May 2026. TARA stands for Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation. Notably, it is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system. It turns unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons.

What TARA Does

TARA is a modular range-extension kit. Engineers fit it onto an ordinary, unguided warhead. Then, the kit lets it glide and adds precision guidance. As a result, the bomb can glide a long way and hit ground targets accurately. In addition, it uses low-cost systems to raise the weapon’s lethality and accuracy.

Who Developed It

Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, designed and developed TARA. Other DRDO laboratories supported the work. Moreover, Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPPs) and Indian industries joined the project. Production activity has already begun.

Reactions to the Trial

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the IAF, the DcPPs and industry. He called the trial a significant step for India’s indigenous defence capabilities. Similarly, DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat praised the teams involved.

Why Glide Weapons Matter

Glide kits let fighter jets strike from a safe distance. So, pilots can stay away from enemy air defences. Also, precision guidance reduces collateral damage. Importantly, a low-cost kit lets the Air Force convert large stocks of simple bombs. Hence, TARA adds firepower without heavy import bills.

About Research Centre Imarat

Research Centre Imarat is a DRDO laboratory in Hyderabad. It specialises in avionics, guidance and navigation systems for missiles. Notably, it forms part of DRDO’s Missile Complex in the city.
