Rs 392.52 Crore Approved for Dugadda-Gumkhal Road on NH-534 in Pauri Garhwal

Dugadda-Gumkhal road on NH-534 two-laning project in Pauri Garhwal Uttarakhand

The Centre has approved Rs 392.52 crore to upgrade the Dugadda-Gumkhal road in Pauri Garhwal district. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the sanction on social media. All India Radio reported the approval on 8 January 2026. The 18.1 km stretch forms part of National Highway 534 (old NH-119). Under the project, it will become a two-lane road with paved shoulders. As a result, travel between the plains and the Pauri hills should become safer.

Scope of the Two-Laning Work

Besides widening, the project covers pavement strengthening and carriageway upgradation. Moreover, it includes safety and geometric improvements along the corridor. Therefore, the work should ease narrow and risky sections on this hill road. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) approved the funds for the project.

Why the Stretch Matters

First, the road improves connectivity between Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Second, it gives better access to Lansdowne Cantonment. In addition, it serves as an alternative route for Char Dham Yatra pilgrims. It also matters for defence movement and administration in the Pauri region. Hence, both residents and pilgrims stand to gain.

Part of a Wider NH-534 Upgrade

Notably, work on the next section had moved ahead earlier. In April 2024, the KTIL-Shivalik Infra JV emerged as the lowest bidder for the 21 km Gumkhal-Satpuli stretch. That project also covers two-laning with paved shoulders. Together, the two projects will upgrade a long stretch from Dugadda towards Satpuli.

About NH-534 and Pauri Garhwal

NH-534 is the renumbered form of the old NH-119 in Uttarakhand. In the state, it climbs from Kotdwar in the Bhabar belt into the hills of Pauri Garhwal. Dugadda lies close to Kotdwar, while Gumkhal sits higher up on the road to Satpuli. Also, Pauri town serves as the headquarters of the Garhwal division. Lansdowne, home of the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, lies in the same district.
