Ganga Expressway Extension to Haridwar: Uttarakhand Cabinet Gives Nod

Ganga Expressway extension from Meerut to Haridwar approved by Uttarakhand Cabinet

The Uttarakhand Cabinet has approved a proposal to extend the Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Haridwar. Notably, the extension will need a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, it will cut travel time between Prayagraj and Haridwar. Clearly, it is a major step for road connectivity in the region.

About the Ganga Expressway

The Ganga Expressway runs about 594 km from Meerut to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. It is a six-lane road that can expand to eight lanes. Also, it passes through 12 districts of western, central and eastern UP. In addition, it has an airstrip for emergency landing of aircraft in Shahjahanpur.

Details of the Haridwar Extension

According to reports, the extension from Meerut to Haridwar could be about 110 to 140 km long. As a result, travel between Prayagraj and Haridwar may take only seven to eight hours. Thus, the two holy cities of the Ganga will come much closer.

Benefits for Uttarakhand

The extension brings several benefits for the state:

Other Key Road Projects

The Ganga Expressway extension adds to other big projects. For example, the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor is cutting travel time to the capital. Similarly, the Char Dham all-weather road is improving hill connectivity. Together, these projects reshape travel in the region.

Concerns to Address

However, large road projects need careful planning. For instance, they can affect farmland, forests and wildlife corridors near the Rajaji area. Therefore, proper environmental checks will be important.
