Lt Gen Gurmit Singh becomes Uttarakhand’s longest-serving Governor

Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) has set a new record in Uttarakhand. He has become the state’s longest-serving Governor. Notably, he crossed the earlier record of former Governor Sudarshan Agarwal. Agarwal had served for 1,755 days.

A New Chapter in Uttarakhand’s History

This record marks a new entry in the state’s constitutional history. Gurmit Singh took charge as Governor on 15 September 2021. Since then, he has served for over four years and nine months. Thus, he is now the longest-serving Governor in the state’s history.

About Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd)

Gurmit Singh served in the Indian Army for about four decades. Also, he retired as Deputy Chief of the Army Staff. During his career, he dealt with strategic matters, including China-related affairs. Furthermore, he has received several top military honours. As Governor, he has focused on education, health and the welfare of soldiers.

The Governor is the constitutional head of the state. Under Article 155, the President appoints the Governor. Also, the Governor normally holds office for five years.
