India met nearly 73% of its total fertiliser requirement in 2025 through domestic fertiliser production. The Government of India shared this figure in an official statement on 9 January 2026. Moreover, total output of urea, DAP, NPK complexes and SSP reached an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes. The government called it “a significant milestone in achieving self-reliance.” Hence, India now depends less on imported fertilisers.
Record Output of 524.62 Lakh Tonnes
Notably, combined production stood at 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021. It then rose to 507.93 lakh tonnes in 2023 and 509.57 lakh tonnes in 2024. Finally, output jumped to 524.62 lakh tonnes in 2025. So, production grew by about 91 lakh tonnes, or roughly 21%, between 2021 and 2025.
What Drove the Growth
According to the statement, several factors drove the rise. First, new fertiliser plants started production. Second, the government revived units that had earlier shut down. In addition, it promoted indigenous manufacturing and signed long-term raw material supply agreements. Meanwhile, it followed “strategic diversification” of sources against global supply shocks.
Urea and the Import Gap
However, India still imports large volumes of some fertilisers. Urea production rose from 225 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 306.67 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. Still, India imported more than 100 lakh tonnes of urea in 2025-26. Therefore, the remaining gap keeps India exposed to global price swings.
About Fertiliser Products
Urea supplies nitrogen, while DAP provides nitrogen and phosphorus. Likewise, NPK complexes contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Also, SSP supplies phosphorus, sulphur and calcium. Finally, the Department of Fertilizers under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers oversees the sector.
Latest Update
On 25 May 2026, Additional Secretary Aparna S Sharma said fertiliser stocks were comfortable for Kharif 2026. Notably, she put the Kharif requirement at 390.54 lakh tonnes against a stock of 200.12 lakh tonnes. Also, the 2026-27 budget set aside Rs 1.71 lakh crore for fertiliser subsidy.
