India’s First Commercial Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate Project Launched in Odisha
Why is the Lakhanpur Project in the News?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a massive coal gasification project today in Lakhanpur, Odisha. Consequently, this Rs 25,016 crore initiative marks a historic milestone for India’s industrial sector.
Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) is developing this mega facility. Specifically, BCGCL is a joint venture between BHEL and Coal India Limited. The plant will produce 2,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate daily using indigenous technology. Therefore, it stands as India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate facility.
Coal Gasification: Driving India’s Energy Security
First and foremost, coal gasification converts raw coal into valuable synthesis gas, or syngas. Manufacturers then use syngas to create methanol, urea, and critical chemical feedstocks.
Currently, India holds the world’s fifth-largest coal reserves, exceeding 400 billion tonnes. In addition, Coal India Limited operates as the largest coal-producing company globally. Thus, leveraging these massive domestic resources makes perfect strategic sense.
To support this shift, the government approved incentive schemes worth Rs 46,000 crore. As a result, these funds will accelerate surface coal and lignite gasification projects nationwide. Ultimately, this strategy will reduce heavy reliance on imported natural gas and ammonia.
Why India Urgently Needs the Lakhanpur Project
At present, India imports intermediate chemical products worth Rs 2.7 lakh crore annually. However, the Lakhanpur project will directly replace these costly imports. Consequently, the nation will save substantial foreign exchange and boost domestic manufacturing.
Furthermore, this broad initiative will catalyze investments between Rs 2.5 and Rs 3 lakh crore. It will also create roughly 50,000 direct and indirect jobs across 25 projects. Clearly, the economic benefits for coal-bearing regions will be immense.
Project Location and Next Steps
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has provided 350 acres of land for the complex. Indeed, the partners signed the official land-leasing agreement earlier this April.
Furthermore, the Union Ministry of Coal is actively providing Rs 1,350 crore in financial support. Because the project already secured all necessary clearances, physical construction work will begin immediately.
In conclusion, the Lakhanpur facility will serve as a model for future clean coal ventures. It perfectly aligns with the national vision of a self-reliant manufacturing powerhouse.
