Khelo India Scheme Revamped: Cabinet Approves ₹36,441 Crore for 2026–31

Revamped Khelo India Scheme approved by the Union Cabinet

The Union Cabinet has approved a revamped Khelo India Scheme. Notably, it comes with enhanced Assistance to National Sports Federations. Together, the two have a combined outlay of ₹36,441 crore. Moreover, the plan covers the period from 2026–27 to 2030–31.

Aim of the Revamped Khelo India Scheme

The scheme seeks a clear pathway from grassroots to global podiums. In other words, it wants to spot talent early and support athletes for years. Also, it aims to widen chances for young players across India. Thus, it supports India’s goal of becoming a sporting nation.

Key Focus Areas

Khelo India Games

The scheme runs several national events. For example, these include the Khelo India Youth Games and University Games. Similarly, there are Khelo India Beach Games and Tribal Games. Also, a Khelo India Water Sports Festival encourages water-based sports. So, athletes from many backgrounds get a stage.

Background

The government launched Khelo India in 2017–18. It merged older sports schemes into one programme. Since then, it has set up Khelo India Centres and State Centres of Excellence. Also, it supports the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for elite athletes.

Link With Ahmedabad 2030 and Olympic Hopes

India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. Also, India has shown interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. Therefore, a strong athlete pipeline is vital. Hence, the revamped scheme comes at the right time.

Why Khelo India Matters for UPSC and UKPSC

Notably, sports schemes often appear in current affairs questions. So, remember the outlay, the period and the new events. Also, link the scheme with TOPS and Fit India.
