Census 2027: Ladakh to Become the First UT to Complete the Census Exercise

Ladakh to become the first UT to complete the Census 2027 exercise

Ladakh is set to become the first State or Union Territory to finish the entire Census 2027 exercise. Notably, it plans to complete all census work by the end of September 2026. Moreover, this will happen well before most of India. Clearly, the early schedule reflects Ladakh’s tough winter conditions.

Ladakh’s Census Schedule

In total, Ladakh has about 637 enumeration blocks. Also, the house listing phase achieved 100 per cent digital data collection.

Why Ladakh Goes First

Ladakh faces harsh winters, difficult terrain and limited access. Therefore, officials scheduled its census early. As a result, the work can finish before snow cuts off many areas. Similarly, other snow-bound areas follow an earlier reference date. These include parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

India’s First Digital Census

Census 2027 will be India’s first fully digital census. For instance, enumerators use mobile apps instead of paper forms. Also, citizens can fill in their own details through self-enumeration. Consequently, data should become faster and more accurate.

Two Phases of the Census

The census runs in two main phases. First, the house listing phase records houses and household amenities. Next, the population enumeration phase records details of each person. These include age, education, work, migration, language, disability and fertility. Notably, Census 2027 will also count caste.

Reference Dates

For most of India, the reference date is 1 March 2027. However, for snow-bound areas, it is 1 October 2026. Hence, Ladakh and similar regions finish their counts earlier.

Why Census 2027 Matters for UPSC and UKPSC

Notably, the census is a key topic for polity, society and economy. So, remember the two phases, the reference dates and the digital mode. Also, note that Uttarakhand’s snow-bound areas follow the early date. For official updates, also visit the Census of India website.
