LBSNAA Social Media Advisory: New IAS, IPS Officers Told to Avoid Self-Promotion

LBSNAA social media advisory for newly recruited IAS and IPS officers in Mussoorie

The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) has issued fresh guidelines to new civil servants. Reports on 19 March 2026 covered the LBSNAA social media advisory. It asks new IAS and IPS officers to avoid personal publicity online. Notably, the academy wants officers to show restraint and stay neutral on social media. So, the move marks a course correction amid the trend of “viral officers”.

What the Advisory Says

The guidelines ask officers to avoid controversial posts and impulsive comments. Also, they warn against content that may look self-serving. Moreover, officers should stay mindful of their digital footprint even before they formally join service. According to the academy, civil servants are “the face of the state”.

Why the Academy Acted

In recent years, several young officers have built large followings on Instagram and X. Often, they share daily work and personal stories. However, the academy cautioned that personal branding “could dilute public trust and the institutional image of the services”. Thus, officials said the move reinforces the core values of the civil services.

Technology for Governance, Not Visibility

Notably, the academy has not discouraged technology in governance. Instead, it drew a line between two uses. Officers may use digital platforms for public service delivery. However, they should not use them for personal visibility. So, professionalism and discretion stay central to the bureaucracy.

An Earlier Advisory in 2025

This is not the first such step. In April 2025, LBSNAA issued an advisory to candidates selected in CSE 2024. Back then, it asked them to stay away from gifts, hospitality and free promotions. Also, it told them to be careful with social media posts about the service.
