Mangal Singh Rank 11 UKPSC 2021: ARTO

The UKPSC Upper PCS 2021 result proved that an average student can also crack a tough exam. Mangal Singh Rank 11 UKPSC 2021 secured the post of Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO). Moreover, he prepared for it while working in a bank.

He shared his three-year journey in a candid success talk with SAMVEG IAS. So, here are the key takeaways from his preparation.

Major Highlights of Mangal Singh’s Interview with Samveg IAS

From an Average Student to an Officer

Mangal calls himself an average student since childhood. He scored 49% in Class 10 and 59% in Class 12. Also, his graduation marks were average. At first, civil services did not interest him at all. In fact, he felt the exam was too tough for him.

Then, he got a job in 2017. Later, a colleague of his cleared the UP PCS exam. That colleague motivated him, and so he began preparing. Finally, his selection brought great joy to his parents and colleagues.

Prelims Strategy

First, he built a strong base with basic books. These included NCERTs, Laxmikanth for Polity and Spectrum for History. Then, he took mock tests and used their feedback. Also, he solved previous year question papers carefully.

Mains: From Slow Answers to Better Scores

He says prelims and mains preparation go together. Initially, his answers were not good. Also, one answer took too long, so he could not finish papers on time. However, regular practice slowly fixed this.

After clearing prelims, he joined SAMVEG IAS for mains mock tests. The feedback helped him a lot. Then, his marks began to improve, and his confidence grew. Thus, mock tests and books together shaped his mains preparation.

Interview Preparation of Mangal Singh Rank 11 UKPSC 2021

First, he looked at his strengths and weaknesses. Next, he prepared his hobbies well. Since he works in a bank, he also prepared banking-related questions. Finally, he took two mock interviews at SAMVEG IAS.

He feels feedback plays a key role here. A good mock panel points out your gestures, posture and shortcomings. So, when you work on them, you can face the real interview better.

Revision and Concise Sources

Reading something for the first time feels good, he says. However, the real challenge is revising it again and again. He studied the strategies of toppers and saw that they stressed revision. Therefore, he revised the same material repeatedly.

Also, Mangal Singh Rank 11 UKPSC 2021 kept his sources concise. He relied on basic books like Laxmikanth and Spectrum. In this way, he did not spread his resources too wide.

Staying Motivated and Positive

Ups and downs are normal in such a long journey. For Mangal, motivation came from three sources:

Moreover, he advises sharing negative thoughts with a friend or colleague who motivates you. When you share, he says, the negativity fades. His parents often told him, “You have come this far. Work a little more, and you will reach your goal.”

Social Media and the New Mains Pattern

Reels can eat up hours without notice. So, he deleted social media apps from his phone. Also, he never saved passwords in his browser. That way, he had to log in every time, which kept him away.

For the new UKPSC Upper PCS mains pattern, he gives two tips. First, earlier you could skip Uttarakhand questions and attempt general ones. Now, Uttarakhand is compulsory, and Papers 6 and 7 cover the state. So, give Uttarakhand special focus. Second, Hindi and Essay can fetch good marks, so keep practising them. Also, the rest of the syllabus follows UPSC lines, so standard books will help.
