Uttarakhand is speeding up its drive to revive natural springs and rivers. As part of this effort, SARA has launched the One District One River programme. Under it, the authority has selected one river in each district. Notably, each chosen river will get focused rejuvenation work.
What Is SARA?
SARA stands for the Spring and River Rejuvenation Authority. The state set it up under the Watershed Management Department. Essentially, its job is to revive drying springs, streams and rivers. Moreover, it uses scientific methods and community participation for this work.
Why the One District One River Programme Is Needed
Many hill rivers in Uttarakhand are rain-fed and spring-fed. However, their flow is falling in many areas. For instance, deforestation, construction and changing rainfall affect their recharge. Also, rising water demand puts extra pressure on them. Consequently, many villages face water shortages in dry months.
So, a focused river in every district makes the task more manageable. In turn, it can show visible results that others can copy.
How Rivers Are Rejuvenated
Rejuvenation usually starts in the catchment area. First, experts study the river and its springs. Next, they plan recharge structures like pits, trenches and check dams. In addition, they promote tree planting and soil conservation. Finally, local communities help maintain the work over time.
Link With Spring Mapping
The programme also connects with spring mapping in the state. Notably, villagers have mapped 4,660 water sources on the Bhagirath App. Of these, 1,174 sources show less than 20 per cent of normal flow. Therefore, data from the app can guide SARA’s river and spring work.
Wider Importance
Healthy rivers support farming, drinking water and wildlife. Also, they keep the Himalayan water towers working for the plains below. Hence, river revival in Uttarakhand matters for the whole Ganga basin.
Why One District One River Matters for UKPSC
