Major Highlights of Shivangi Bisht’s Interview with Samveg IAS
Background and Motivation
Shivangi completed her B.Sc. in Agriculture from GB Pant University, Pantnagar. After that, she did not want to pursue an M.Sc. or a PhD. So, she simply decided to prepare for civil services instead.
Prelims Strategy of Shivangi Bisht Rank 11 UKPSC Lower PCS 2024
According to Shivangi, Uttarakhand plays a key role in prelims. In fact, she feels nearly half of the GS questions come from the state. So, she stuck to Pariksha Vani alone, since it was enough for Lower PCS prelims.
- First, she read the first 100 pages of Pariksha Vani.
- Then, she solved the old PYQs given at the back of the book.
- After that, she read the rest of its content in depth.
For CSAT, she had no time for a full study. Instead, she solved every type of PYQ and then practised three or four similar questions. Also, she used FRO PYQs, since FRO and Lower PCS prelims follow a similar pattern. Moreover, see our UKPSC Lower PCS exam guide for the latest pattern.
English Medium, Hindi Sources
Many aspirants ask how she studied from Hindi books. Her answer is simple: do not make the medium an issue. Otherwise, you will fall behind in the competition. So, whenever a Hindi word felt tough, she Googled it and wrote its meaning beside it.
Also, she owns an Arihant book for English-medium candidates. However, she rarely needed it, as Pariksha Vani was enough. For current affairs, she read a six-monthly compilation just before the exam.
Mains: Facts and Data
In mains, she kept a special focus on Uttarakhand. So, she made point-wise notes from Pariksha Vani. Moreover, she collected the latest data, indices and reports. She used ChatGPT to find what NITI Aayog or various ministries had said. Then, in the gaps between papers, she revised only these facts. In fact, she kept reading them until she entered the exam gate.
For the essay, she chose a Science and Technology topic, which few candidates usually pick. However, she saw more scope to write there. She feels it earned her good marks, since she added reports and technical details.
Answer Writing Approach
Shivangi studied the copies of UPSC candidates and listened to their advice. Then, she followed one fixed structure:
- First, write a proper introduction based on the question.
- Next, keep the point-wise main body relevant to the question. Otherwise, you lose marks.
- Then, add challenges and government schemes if space allows.
- Finally, end with a two-to-three-line conclusion. Also, draw a flowchart where it fits.
Her Interview Experience
Her interview was quite short. Also, the board asked her hardly any technical questions. Instead, they asked situation-based questions, such as what she would do as a woman officer. Naturally, she worried about her marks afterwards. However, she kept her smile and confidence, just as her mocks had taught her.
Social Media and a Word of Advice
After filling the prelims form, she used social media for one week. Then, she deactivated it until prelims. After prelims, she used it for a week to refresh her mind. Then, she deactivated it again until mains. So, this cycle continued through her preparation.
Once, she faced a year of setbacks with no results. So, she started filling every form, including banking exams. Still, nothing worked, and she felt very low. Therefore, her advice is to work hard on one goal and keep going. “When your time comes, it gives you a lot,” says Shivangi Bisht Rank 11 UKPSC Lower PCS 2024.
Association with SAMVEG IAS
Shivangi joined our Interview Guidance Programme (IGP) and gave mock interviews at SAMVEG IAS. These mocks taught her how to face questions and what not to say. Moreover, she learnt that a calm correction of a slip does not cost marks. Indeed, her journey shows the value of practice before the real board.
