Interestingly, she began with UPSC before shifting to Uttarakhand. She shared her journey in a success talk with SAMVEG IAS. So, here are the key lessons from her preparation.

Major Highlights of Shivangi Rawat’s Interview with Samveg IAS

Background and Motivation

Shivangi graduated from Delhi University in 2018 with a BA Programme in Maths and Computer. Then, she completed her master’s in Political Science in 2020. Later, she enrolled for a B.Ed in 2024 and completed it in 2026.

Her father is already in government service. So, since childhood, she wanted to serve people and bring change in society. Therefore, she focused on civil services right from her graduation days.

Prelims Strategy of Shivangi Rawat Rank 18 UKPSC Lower PCS 2024

As she explains, Lower PCS prelims carries 150 marks: 100 for GS and 50 for maths. Her UPSC preparation since 2020 gave her a good hold on CSAT. So, she focused on scoring in GS. Also, see our UKPSC Lower PCS exam guide for the full pattern.

Initially, she also looked at Arihant books for Uttarakhand. Later, however, she realised that Pariksha Vani is a must. It feels hard at first, she admits. Still, you begin to enjoy it after some time.

Mains: Essay, Hindi and Standard Books

Lower PCS mains has Essay, Hindi, GS 1 and GS 2 papers. For the essay, her long preparation paid off. In fact, she still remembers one topic: “Political dissent is a lifeline of democracy.” Her Political Science background, also her UPSC optional, helped her write it.

For GS, she relied on NCERTs of Class 9 to 12. According to her, they form the core, and some questions come directly from them. Moreover, she read Laxmikanth for Polity and Spectrum for History. For maths, she followed the syllabus topic by topic.

Answer Writing: Points, Not Paragraphs

This was her second mains. Earlier, she had written the Upper PCS mains too. At first, she wrote answers in paragraphs. However, she learnt that this does not work. So, use points and headings in every answer.

Then, for the interview, she took mock interviews with Samveg Sir.

Hindi for English-Medium Aspirants

English-medium students often struggle with the Hindi paper. Shivangi compares Hindi with maths. If you do not practise it, you forget it.

After all, Hindi appears in both Upper and Lower PCS. Therefore, it carries real weight in written exams.

Setbacks, Burnout and Balance

She started with UPSC in 2020 and faced many failures there. Then, she shifted her focus to Uttarakhand. Over time, mental burnout set in. People asked questions, and friends seemed to move ahead. Naturally, comparison crept in.

However, her parents and her elder sister supported her strongly. Also, her friends in Delhi and Dehradun kept saying, “You will do it.” “Family support is a must,” she says.

Besides, she stresses physical health. First, she did yoga, and later she joined the gym. Personally, exercise helped her study better. So, enjoy life and keep studying side by side.

With social media, she took a middle path. Her Instagram account stayed deactivated most of the time. However, she used it when exams were far away. Then, as exams came near, she deactivated it again.

Her Advice: Set a Timeline, Build a Backup

First, give yourself a fixed time, say two or three years, and give your best. Meanwhile, build skills through online courses. That way, you keep a backup ready.

Also, an exam is only one part of life. So, do not spoil your food or your relationships over it. “Being happy is the most important thing,” says Shivangi Rawat Rank 18 UKPSC Lower PCS 2024.

Association with SAMVEG IAS

Shivangi stayed with SAMVEG IAS across all three stages. When she started Uttarakhand preparation, she joined our prelims test series. Then, she took our Mains Guidance Programme (MGP) and Interview Guidance Programme (IGP). She says Sir never let her feel less than anyone. Also, she found the test papers close to the actual exam. Still, the credit belongs to her own hard work. Indeed, Shivangi Rawat Rank 18 UKPSC Lower PCS 2024 shows that a shift from UPSC can lead to success.
