Skyroot Aerospace has launched Vikram-1, India’s first private orbital rocket. The launch took place on 18 July 2026. Notably, the rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Moreover, it placed its payloads in a low-Earth orbit of about 450 km.
Key Features of Vikram-1
- Developer: Skyroot Aerospace, Hyderabad
- Stages: Three main stages
- Height: About 22 metres
- Payload capacity: About 350 kg to low-Earth orbit
- Orbit achieved: About 450 km
What the Mission Achieved
The mission tested the rocket’s propulsion, avionics and telemetry systems in flight. Also, it validated guidance, navigation and control. Furthermore, it carried customer payloads and experimental equipment. So, the flight proved that Vikram-1 can serve paying customers.
A Big Leap From Vikram-S
In November 2022, Skyroot launched Vikram-S. It was India’s first privately built rocket to reach space. However, it flew only a suborbital path. In contrast, Vikram-1 reached orbit. Hence, this mission marks a major leap.
About Skyroot Aerospace
Former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka founded Skyroot in 2018. The company named its rockets after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space programme. Earlier in 2026, Skyroot reached a valuation of about one billion US dollars.
Space Reforms Behind the Success
India opened its space sector to private firms in 2020. For example, IN-SPACe now authorises and supports private space activity. Similarly, the Indian Space Policy 2023 set clear roles for ISRO and private players. As a result, startups like Skyroot can now build and launch rockets.
Why Vikram-1 Matters for UPSC and UKPSC
