Tehri Lake to Become a Global Destination Under ‘One State, One Global Destination’

Tehri Lake master plan under One State One Global Destination initiative

Uttarakhand plans to develop Tehri Lake as an international tourist destination. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan gave this direction at a meeting with the Tourism Department. Notably, the plan falls under the “One State, One Global Destination” idea. Moreover, he asked officials to prepare a complete master plan for the lake area.

KEY FACT

Tehri Lake will be developed as a global destination under ‘One State, One Global Destination’, with a master plan for about 8,000 hectares.

Master Plan for 8,000 Hectares Around Tehri Lake

The Chief Secretary asked for a master plan and a zonal plan together. In total, the plan will cover nearly 8,000 hectares around the lake. Also, it will include both government and private land. Above all, it aims to stop unplanned and haphazard construction.

Furthermore, officials must consult all stakeholders while preparing the plan. Thus, the plan can reflect local geography, local needs and environmental sensitivity.

Magnet Areas and Phase-Wise Work

Next, the Chief Secretary asked for key attraction centres, or “magnet areas”, around the lake. In addition, he wanted a phase-wise plan to develop projects by priority. Importantly, activities should make tourists stay for at least one or two days.

Year-Round Tourism at Tehri Lake

Water levels in Tehri Lake drop during April, May and June. Therefore, the Chief Secretary asked for a special action plan for these months. Similarly, he asked for an activity calendar based on weather and water levels. As a result, tourism can run throughout the year.

Treks, Trails and Village Tourism

He also asked officials to develop new trekking routes and trails. Likewise, nearby villages should join the tourism network. For instance, tourists could enjoy village and cultural visits. Consequently, they can learn about local culture, food and rural life. At the same time, local people can earn from jobs and self-employment.

Finally, officials must prepare a detailed presentation on the plan. In fact, the government intends to present it before the Prime Minister.

About Tehri Dam and Tehri Lake

Tehri Lake formed behind the Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi River. Notably, the Tehri Dam is India’s highest dam, at about 260 metres. Today, the reservoir already hosts water sports and the Tehri Lake Festival. So, a global-level master plan could greatly raise its tourism profile.
