Uttarakhand Lok Sabha seats and 2024 MPs
The State sends five members to the Lok Sabha. The table therefore lists the official seat names, the 2024 winners and their margins.
| Seat | Member (BJP), 2024 | Winning margin |
|---|---|---|
| Tehri Garhwal | Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah | 2,72,493 |
| Garhwal | Anil Baluni | 1,63,503 |
| Almora (SC) | Ajay Tamta | 2,34,097 |
| Nainital–Udhamsingh Nagar | Ajay Bhatt | 3,34,548 |
| Haridwar | Trivendra Singh Rawat | 1,64,056 |
Ajay Bhatt won by the largest margin in the State. By contrast, Anil Baluni had the smallest margin among the five winners. In addition, all five seats voted in the first phase on 19 April 2024.
Official names and segments
The official name is “Garhwal”, not “Pauri Garhwal”. Likewise, the Nainital seat is officially “Nainital–Udhamsingh Nagar”. So, examiners often use wrong names as distractors.
After the 2008 delimitation, each of the Uttarakhand Lok Sabha seats covers 14 Assembly segments. Thus, 5 seats × 14 segments = 70, the full strength of the Vidhan Sabha. For the district-wise segments, see the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha seats list.
The same exercise also shifted the Ramnagar segment. Earlier, it was in the Nainital seat; however, it now falls in the Garhwal seat.
The reserved Lok Sabha seat
Almora has been the SC seat since 2008. Before that, however, Haridwar held this status. Besides, Articles 330 and 332 provide for reserved SC and ST seats.
Rajya Sabha seats and members
Uttarakhand also has three seats in the Rajya Sabha. The MLAs of the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha elect these members. At present, all three seats are with the BJP.
| Member | Party | Term |
|---|---|---|
| Naresh Bansal | BJP | 26 Nov 2020 – 25 Nov 2026 |
| Kalpana Saini | BJP | 5 Jul 2022 – 4 Jul 2028 |
| Mahendra Bhatt | BJP | 3 Apr 2024 – 2 Apr 2030 |
Note on the Bansal seat: On 9 October 2026, Dinesh Arya (BJP) won this seat unopposed. He takes the seat that falls vacant on 25 November 2026. Thus, Bansal remains the sitting member until his term ends (as on 29 October 2026).
Rajya Sabha firsts
At formation, the new State got some sitting members by allotment. For example, Sushma Swaraj (2000–2006) was among them. Later, Harish Rawat (INC) became the first member elected by the Uttarakhand Assembly, in 2002.
Similarly, Manorama Dobriyal Sharma (INC) became the first woman elected by the Assembly, in 2014. Earlier, she had been the first Mayor of Dehradun. Then Kalpana Saini (BJP) followed in 2022 as the second woman.
Besides, Pradeep Tamta (INC) served in the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022.
Lok Sabha history and firsts
The region’s parliamentary history goes back to the first general election of 1952. In fact, some names from that era still appear in UKPSC papers.
- Bhakt Darshan (INC): he represented Garhwal from 1952 to 1971, thus winning four terms in a row.
- Kamlendu Mati Shah: she belonged to the Tehri royal family. In 1952, she won Tehri Garhwal and so became the region’s first woman MP.

Union Cabinet ministers from the region
Several leaders from the region have also held senior Union portfolios. The table lists them with their main ministries.
| Leader | Union portfolio(s) |
|---|---|
| G. B. Pant | Home |
| Mahavir Tyagi | Revenue and Defence Expenditure |
| H. N. Bahuguna | Communications; Petroleum and Chemicals |
| N. D. Tiwari | External Affairs; Finance; Industry; Commerce |
| K. C. Pant | Energy; Defence; Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission |
| B. C. Khanduri | Road Transport and Highways |
| Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ | Education |
Notably, three of these leaders also served as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. They are N. D. Tiwari, B. C. Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. For their tenures, see the Uttarakhand CM list.
Who conducts parliamentary elections
The Election Commission of India conducts Lok Sabha polls in the State. It works through the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttarakhand. For example, V. Shanmugam held the post from May 2023. Later, B. V. R. C. Purushottam took over in 2024.
Exam corner: common traps
- Uttarakhand has 5 Lok Sabha seats and 3 Rajya Sabha seats; so, do not swap the two figures.
- Almora is the SC seat today; Haridwar held that status only before 2008.
- Chakrata is an Assembly seat, not a Lok Sabha seat; also, the official name is “Garhwal”, not “Pauri Garhwal”.
- Ramnagar segment is in the Garhwal Lok Sabha seat, not Nainital–Udhamsingh Nagar.
- Dinesh Arya has won, but Naresh Bansal’s term still runs until 25 November 2026.
