The historic Vamana Dwadashi Mela is set to begin at Triyuginarayan in Uttarakhand. Notably, Triyuginarayan is the sacred site of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s wedding. Devotees will celebrate the fair with deep faith, joy and grandeur. Moreover, special rituals will honour Lord Vishnu in his Vamana form.
The Vamana Dwadashi Mela is held at Triyuginarayan in Rudraprayag district, the legendary wedding site of Shiva and Parvati.
Rituals of the Vamana Dwadashi Mela
The fair opens with a special puja of Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar. In addition, a grand doli yatra of the deity will take place. Also, priests will perform many traditional rituals during the fair. Thus, the event blends worship, folk culture and community life.
About Triyuginarayan Temple
Triyuginarayan lies in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. According to legend, Shiva and Parvati married here in the presence of Lord Vishnu. Interestingly, the temple keeps an eternal fire, the Akhand Dhuni. Devotees believe this fire has burned since the Treta Yuga. In fact, the name “Triyuginarayan” refers to this flame burning across three yugas.
Today, Triyuginarayan has also become a popular wedding destination. Indeed, many couples now choose to marry at this sacred site.
Who Was Vamana?
Vamana is the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to the legend, he appeared as a dwarf Brahmin. Then, he asked King Bali for land measuring three steps. Next, Vamana grew to a cosmic size and covered the earth and sky in two steps. Finally, Bali offered his own head for the third step. Hence, the story celebrates humility and devotion.
Why Vamana Dwadashi Is Celebrated
Vamana Dwadashi falls on the twelfth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada month. Therefore, devotees mark the day with worship of Vishnu’s Vamana form. At Triyuginarayan, the day turns into a large community fair.
Fairs and Festivals of Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand has a rich calendar of religious fairs. For example, the Nanda Devi Raj Jat, the Uttarayani Mela and the Jauljibi Mela are well known. Likewise, the Vamana Dwadashi Mela adds to this living heritage. So, such fairs keep local traditions alive across generations.
