Naini Lake Ecology: Pantnagar University Releases 21,000 Fish Including Golden Mahseer

Fish released into Naini Lake to improve its ecology

The ecology of Naini Lake in Nainital is getting fresh help. The Fisheries Department of Pantnagar University has released 21,000 fish into the lake. The university’s full name is G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. Notably, the fish entered the lake from the Phansi Gadhera area of Tallital. Moreover, the step aims to improve the health of the lake’s ecosystem.

Fish Released Into Naini Lake

In total, 21,000 fish went into the lake.

Why Release Fish Into a Lake?

Fish play a key role in a lake’s food chain. For example, silver carp feed on tiny floating plants called phytoplankton. So, they can help control algae that grow in polluted water. As a result, water quality may improve. Scientists call this method biomanipulation.

Meanwhile, golden mahseer is a native fish of Himalayan waters. However, its numbers have fallen sharply in many rivers and lakes. Therefore, releasing mahseer also supports the conservation of this species.

About the Golden Mahseer

People often call the golden mahseer the “tiger of the water” because of its strength. Also, it is the state fish of Uttarakhand. However, the IUCN lists it as Endangered. Dams, pollution and overfishing are the main threats. Hence, steps like this help protect it.

Naini Lake’s Ongoing Revival

Naini Lake has faced problems like pollution and low oxygen near the lake bed. Earlier, artificial aeration helped revive the lake. Now, the release of fish adds another layer to these efforts. Thus, science and conservation are working together to protect Nainital’s famous lake.

Why Naini Lake Matters for UKPSC

Notably, UKPSC often asks about lakes, fish and conservation in the state. So, remember the three species, the numbers and the university involved. Also, revise the golden mahseer as the state fish.
