India’s Republic Day 2026 chief guests were two top leaders of the European Union (EU). They were European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Notably, this marked the first time the EU took part in India’s Republic Day celebrations. Also, the 77th Republic Day celebrated 150 years of Vande Mataram. Hence, the visit also sealed a landmark trade deal.
EU Leaders at the 77th Republic Day
The two leaders watched the parade on Kartavya Path on 26 January 2026. Then, President Droupadi Murmu hosted them at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 27 January. She said the trade agreement “will bring significant positive changes to the lives of our people.” Also, she said the defence pact “will open new opportunities for our defence industries.”
Tribute to 150 Years of Vande Mataram
The celebrations honoured the 150th year of the national song. For example, the Ministry of Culture presented a tableau on “150 Years of Vande Mataram”. In addition, artists performed a grand dance tribute along Kartavya Path.
16th India-EU Summit and the FTA
India and the EU held their 16th summit in New Delhi on 27 January 2026. There, the leaders concluded talks on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Notably, negotiations began in 2007, stalled in 2013 and resumed in June 2022. PM Narendra Modi called it “not just a trade agreement, but a new blueprint for shared prosperity.”
Other Summit Outcomes
The two sides also signed a Security and Defence Partnership, their first such framework. Moreover, they adopted a joint strategic agenda titled “Towards 2030”. Also, they launched a Green Hydrogen Task Force. Further, they agreed to pursue investment protection and Geographical Indications agreements. Finally, the next summit will take place in Brussels in 2027.
About Vande Mataram
