UCC in Uttarakhand Turns One: 5 Lakh+ Applications, Zero Privacy Complaints

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) completes one year in Uttarakhand on 27 January 2026. Ahead of the anniversary, Uttarakhand UCC registrations crossed 5 lakh applications for various services. Notably, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the state received no complaint of a privacy breach. Also, almost all applications now come through the online UCC portal.

Service-Wise Figures After One Year

Marriage registration leads the list. By 19 January 2026, the state completed 4,74,447 marriage registrations under the UCC. In addition, 316 people obtained online divorce certificates, according to Aaj Tak. Meanwhile, 68 couples registered live-in relationships, while two received termination certificates.

From 67 to 1,400 Registrations a Day

Earlier, the Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2010 governed marriage registration. Under it, the state recorded about 67 registrations a day. Now, the daily average stands at about 1,400. Also, the old process was offline, so spouses and two witnesses had to visit the Sub-Registrar. Today, applicants upload records and record video statements from anywhere.

Faster Certificates and Privacy Safeguards

The government says it issues certificates in about five days, against a 15-day legal limit. Further, once an officer approves an application, the officer can no longer view personal details. Instead, only the verified applicant can access them. Dhami said Uttarakhand “has shown the way for other states” by implementing the UCC.

Latest Update

On 27 January 2026, the state brought the UCC (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 into force on “UCC Day”. Earlier, Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) cleared it on 26 January under Article 213. Notably, it lets additional secretary-rank officers serve as Registrar General. Also, it extends the deadline for registering pre-UCC marriages from six months to one year.

About the Uniform Civil Code

Article 44 of the Constitution asks the State to secure a uniform civil code. Notably, Uttarakhand became the first state after Independence to implement one. It covers marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships. However, the code keeps Scheduled Tribes outside its scope.
