Actor-producer Aamir Khan has announced a new film called *Silkyara 41*. Notably, it is based on the historic 2023 rescue at the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi. Aamir Khan Productions will make the film. Moreover, it will tell the story of one of India’s most complex rescue operations.
What Happened at Silkyara in 2023
On 12 November 2023, part of the under-construction Silkyara–Barkot tunnel collapsed. As a result, 41 workers got trapped inside. The tunnel was part of the Char Dham all-weather road project. Then, a long and tense rescue began.
The 17-Day Rescue
Rescue teams tried many methods over 17 days. For example, they used a large auger machine to drill through the debris. However, the machine broke down near the end. Finally, a team of “rat-hole” miners dug through the last stretch by hand. On 28 November 2023, all 41 workers came out safely.
Agencies Involved
Many national and international agencies worked together. For instance, NDRF, SDRF, the Army and the Border Roads Organisation joined the effort. Also, international tunnelling expert Arnold Dix advised the teams. Thus, the rescue became a symbol of teamwork.
Why the Story Matters
The rescue showed both the risks and the resilience in Himalayan projects. Also, it raised questions on safety in tunnel building. Furthermore, it highlighted the need for escape tunnels and better geological surveys. Hence, a film can carry these lessons to a wide audience.
Why Silkyara Matters for UKPSC
Notably, UKPSC often asks about disasters and rescue operations in the state. So, remember the date, the number of workers and the 17-day rescue.
