Indian theoretical physicist Ashoke Sen has received the 2026 Oskar Klein Medal. Notably, he is the first Indian physicist to win this honour. The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru, announced the award on 24 October 2026. Also, Sen delivered the Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture in Stockholm on 22 October. Hence, he joins past winners such as Stephen Hawking and Peter Higgs.
Lecture at AlbaNova University Centre, Stockholm
Sen gave his lecture, titled “Gravity from strings and strings from gravity”, on 22 October 2026. The venue was the AlbaNova University Centre in Stockholm. In his talk, he explained how string theory leads to a consistent quantum theory of gravity. Moreover, he discussed open puzzles in the quantum theory of black holes.
Who Is Ashoke Sen?
Sen holds the ICTS-Infosys Madhava Chair at ICTS-TIFR, Bengaluru. According to ICTS, the world recognises his pioneering work on S-duality. Also, his work covers the precision counting of black-hole entropy and string field theory. ICTS Director Rajesh Gopakumar said, “On behalf of all of us, very warm congratulations to Ashoke.”
His Earlier Awards and Honours
Sen won the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2012. It recognised work that helped show all string theories are limits of one underlying theory. In addition, he received the Dirac Medal in 2014. Earlier, he won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1994. Finally, India conferred the Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2013) on him.
About the Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture
The lecture honours Swedish theoretical physicist Oskar Klein (1894–1977). Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences award it annually. Every year since 1988, a distinguished physicist has delivered the lecture and received the medal. Chen Ning Yang became the first recipient in 1988. Later, Stephen Hawking (2003), Peter Higgs (2009) and Kip Thorne (2016) also received it.
