The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) wants a new name and structure. Notably, its board has proposed renaming it the “Badri-Kedar Prabandhan Board”. Moreover, it wants the board’s tenure raised from three to five years. The final decision now rests with the state government.
Key Proposals of the BKTC
- New name: Badri-Kedar Prabandhan Board
- Board tenure: From three years to five years
- Number of members: From 10 to 15
The board passed these proposals with the agreement of all members. Also, it sent them to the government for approval. In fact, the board had cleared them at its March meeting.
Why the Changes Are Needed
The BKTC works under an Act passed in 1939. However, many of its provisions date back to the British period. Therefore, the committee faces practical problems in running temples today. For example, the number of pilgrims rises every year. Also, the committee now manages many temples beyond the two main shrines. Hence, it seeks a modern structure.
What BKTC Chairman Said
BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi said the board passed the proposals with full consent. He added that the old Act does not suit present needs in many ways. So, the board wants updated rules.
About the BKTC
The BKTC manages Badrinath and Kedarnath Dhams. It also looks after several other temples in the region. Notably, it draws its powers from the Shri Badrinath and Shri Kedarnath Temples Act, 1939. Earlier, in 2019, the state set up the Char Dham Devasthanam Board. However, it repealed that law in 2021 after protests by priests. As a result, the BKTC system returned.
Why the BKTC Proposal Matters for UKPSC
Notably, UKPSC often asks about temple management and the Char Dham. So, remember the 1939 Act, the proposed name and the tenure change. Also, revise the Devasthanam Board episode.
