A unique pilgrimage called the Brahmakamal Yatra has set out from Bageshwar district. Every third year, villagers from Leeti village trek to Nanda Kund in the high Himalayas. Notably, the yatra takes place during the traditional Athon Mela. Locals also call it the “Jat Yatra”.
Pilgrims of Leeti village (Bageshwar) trek to Nanda Kund every third year for the Brahmakamal Yatra during the Athon Mela.
What Happens During the Brahmakamal Yatra
During the yatra, local people climb into the high Himalayan meadows. There, they search for the rare Brahmakamal flower. Then, they bring the flowers back to offer them to Goddess Nanda. Thus, the yatra links faith with nature in a deep way.
About the Brahmakamal Flower
Brahmakamal is the state flower of Uttarakhand. Its scientific name is *Saussurea obvallata*. Typically, it grows at heights of about 3,000 to 4,800 metres. Moreover, it blooms during the monsoon months, mainly July to September. Since it grows in harsh places, it is rare and precious. So, local people consider it sacred to Goddess Nanda.
Leeti Village and Nanda Kund
Leeti is a village in Bageshwar district of Kumaon. Meanwhile, Nanda Kund is a high-altitude lake linked to Goddess Nanda. Indeed, the route crosses steep slopes and alpine meadows. Therefore, the trek demands strength, faith and community effort.
Goddess Nanda in Uttarakhand’s Culture
Goddess Nanda holds a special place in both Kumaon and Garhwal. In fact, people see her as a daughter of the hills. For example, the famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat honours her once in about twelve years. Likewise, Nanda Ashtami fairs take place across the state. Hence, the Brahmakamal Yatra forms part of a wider Nanda tradition.
Need to Protect the Brahmakamal
However, picking Brahmakamal needs care. Over-harvesting could harm this slow-growing plant. Also, climate change is altering high-altitude habitats. Therefore, experts stress that only traditional and limited collection should continue.
