The UKPSC Upper PCS 2021 result rewarded many hardworking aspirants of Uttarakhand. Dharmendra Singh Bisht Rank 4 UKPSC 2021 secured the post of Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO). Moreover, he did it with a sharp focus on answer writing and patience.
He shared his journey in a detailed success talk with SAMVEG IAS. So, here are the key lessons from his preparation.
Major Highlights of Dharmendra Singh Bisht’s Interview with Samveg IAS
Background and Motivation
Dharmendra did his schooling at SGRR, Balawala, in Dehradun. Then, he completed his graduation and post-graduation from a PG college in Karanpur, Dehradun.
His father is also a public servant and serves in Uttarakhand Police. So, Dharmendra grew up watching how an officer deals with people and helps them. That inspired him to work for people too. Later, he learnt that civil services let you work with the government for the public. Also, many friends in his college were preparing for this exam. Hence, his resolve grew stronger.
Prelims Strategy: Basics First
First, he reminds aspirants that this process is long. Even a smooth cycle takes at least one and a half to two years. So, make up your mind early and do not panic at any stage. For prelims, he suggests this order:
- Basic books: First, cover Laxmikanth for Polity, Spectrum for History and NCERTs for Geography.
- PCS-focused books: Next, move to Ghatnachakra, and Pariksha Vani for Uttarakhand.
- Current affairs: Also, read a yearly current affairs booklet.
According to him, this is enough for prelims. However, you must revise it well.
Mains Strategy of Dharmendra Singh Bisht Rank 4 UKPSC 2021
He wrote mains under the old pattern. However, UKPSC changed the Upper PCS exam pattern in 2024 and brought it closer to UPSC. In his view, this change helps students. Now, they can easily use UPSC books and related content.
The new mains has eight papers. These are four GS papers, two Uttarakhand papers, one Essay and one Hindi paper. So, read the syllabus and make topic-wise notes for each paper. Later, these notes make final revision easy.
Above all, he stresses execution. “Mains is a game of writing,” he says. Therefore, he kept his sources few and worked hard on presentation. He wanted his answers to look different and interest the examiner. Indeed, this risk worked, and he got better marks in mains.
Start Answer Writing Early
Do not be a seasonal aspirant, he advises. In other words, do not wait for the form or the prelims result to start writing. Instead, begin answer writing at least six months in advance. Then, you will be in full flow on the exam day.
Many well-practised aspirants from outside the state also take this exam. Therefore, Uttarakhand aspirants should start writing as early as possible.
Handling Negative Thoughts
The long cycle often brings doubt. Also, aspirants start comparing themselves with peers. Dharmendra advises against this. His mother once told him that hard work must be done once, in youth or in old age. So, it is better to do it while you are young and full of energy.
He too felt unsure at times, as he did not have a job. Then, he recalled his football days at school. His team captain once told him that the other team also has two hands and two legs. So, do not fear the effort. Moreover, talk to your parents and friends whenever you feel low.
Plan B and Social Media
Every aspirant learns at a different pace, so strategies differ. Along with UKPSC, he also appeared in other exams. If you need financial support, keep a Plan B ready. However, choose a Plan B that keeps you on the same track, such as other states’ PCS exams. Also, avoid a totally different path that diverts your time.
On social media, his choice was simple. He shut down his accounts in 2018, when he began preparing. If you can multitask, that is fine. Otherwise, pause social media for a few years. After success, your profile will grow on its own anyway.
His Success Mantra
For Dharmendra Singh Bisht Rank 4 UKPSC 2021, perseverance and patience matter even more than study. Next comes consistency. So, study daily, even if it is only for one hour. Also, you need no fixed study time.
However, match your routine to the exam one month before it. During his 2021 mains, he felt tired in the second shift. Consequently, his marks in those papers came out lower. So, practise writing two papers, six hours a day, before mains.
