DRDO’s Scramjet Combustor Runs Over 12 Minutes: Big Step for Hypersonic Missiles

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced a hypersonic milestone on 9 January 2026. Its Hyderabad lab, DRDL, carried out a long-duration scramjet combustor test on the ground. Notably, the actively cooled, full-scale combustor ran for over 12 minutes. The test took place at DRDL’s Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) facility. The Defence Ministry called it a “path-breaking milestone in the development of Hypersonic Missiles”. Hence, India moves closer to a long-range hypersonic cruise missile.

What the Ground Test Achieved

The test used a full-scale, actively cooled scramjet combustor, not a small model. Moreover, a run of over 12 minutes shows the engine can sustain combustion for long flights. DRDL designed and developed both the combustor and the test facility. Meanwhile, Indian industry partners built them. According to the ministry, “The successful test positions India at the forefront of advanced aerospace capabilities.”

From Subscale to Full Scale

Earlier, in January 2025, DRDL ran a scramjet combustor ground test for 120 seconds. Then, on 25 April 2025, it ran an actively cooled subscale combustor for over 1,000 seconds. That test also used the new SCPT facility in Hyderabad. So, the January 2026 run marks the jump to a full-scale combustor.

Rajnath Singh Congratulates DRDO

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented DRDO, industry partners and academia on the test. He said the success gives a solid foundation for India’s Hypersonic Cruise Missile Development Programme. Similarly, DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat congratulated the teams involved. Dr Kamat also serves as Secretary, Department of Defence R&D.

What Is a Scramjet Engine?

A scramjet, or supersonic combustion ramjet, is an air-breathing engine. Unlike a rocket, it takes oxygen from the atmosphere instead of carrying an oxidiser. Also, air stays supersonic while fuel burns inside the combustor. Therefore, the engine can power vehicles beyond Mach 5. In fact, a hypersonic cruise missile flies at over five times the speed of sound, above 6,100 km/h.

Why the Scramjet Combustor Test Matters for UPSC and UKPSC

Notably, hypersonic technology often features in GS Paper 3 questions on defence and science. So, remember DRDL, the SCPT facility and the 12-minute run time.
