The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has carried out a major action called Operation Hard Ball. Notably, it worked with law enforcement agencies in the US, Canada, India and Europe. Together, they targeted 37 criminals. Moreover, these criminals face charges of serious international crimes.
Charges Against the Targets
The 37 criminals face charges such as:
- Organised crime
- Targeted killings and shootings
- Extortion
- Large-scale international drug trafficking
- Other serious offences
Clearly, these networks operate across many borders.
Why International Cooperation Matters
Organised crime networks often spread across several countries. For example, a gang may plan a crime in one country and carry it out in another. Also, they move money and drugs through many routes. Therefore, no single country can tackle them alone. Hence, joint efforts like Operation Hard Ball are vital.
India’s Concerns About Overseas Gangs
India has long raised concerns about gangsters operating from abroad. In particular, some run extortion and killings in India from countries like Canada and the US. Also, some are linked to drug and arms smuggling. So, joint action with foreign agencies supports India’s security.
Tools for Global Cooperation
India uses several tools to fight cross-border crime. For instance, Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs) help share evidence. Similarly, extradition treaties help bring fugitives back. Also, INTERPOL notices help track wanted persons. Notably, the CBI acts as India’s national central bureau for INTERPOL.
Why Operation Hard Ball Matters for UPSC and UKPSC
Notably, transnational organised crime is an important internal security topic. So, remember the operation name, the agencies and the crimes involved. Also, revise MLATs, extradition and INTERPOL.
