What Is a Geographical Indication?

A Geographical Indication is a sign used on certain products. It shows that the product comes from a specific place. Moreover, it tells buyers that the product has qualities linked to that place. These qualities may come from local soil, climate or traditional skills.

In India, the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 governs GI tags. The Act came into force in 2003. Also, the Geographical Indications Registry works from Chennai. Notably, Darjeeling Tea became India’s first GI-tagged product. A GI registration stays valid for ten years. After that, it can be renewed.

Benefits of GI-Tagged Products

GI tags offer several clear benefits to producers and buyers. First, they protect traditional products from fake copies. Second, they help local artisans and farmers earn better prices. Third, they boost exports and tourism. Finally, they keep traditional knowledge alive for future generations.

Uttarakhand and GI Tags

Uttarakhand has also earned GI tags for many local products. For instance, Kumaon’s Aipan art carries a GI tag. Likewise, Munsiyari Rajma, Bhotiya Dann carpets and Ringal craft hold the tag. Uttarakhand Tejpat was the state’s first GI product. Recently, the state also opened its first dedicated GI products gallery in Haldwani. Therefore, GI tags are a key topic for state exams too.
