India Overtakes China as World’s Largest Rice Producer; 184 New Crop Varieties Out

India has overtaken China to become the world’s largest rice producer. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced this at an event in New Delhi on 4 January 2026. Notably, India’s rice output stands at 150.18 million tonnes, against China’s 145.28 million tonnes. At the same event, he released 184 improved varieties of 25 field crops. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) developed these varieties. Hence, the event marked both a production record and a push for better seeds.

India Moves Ahead of China

So, India now leads China by about 4.9 million tonnes of rice. Moreover, Chouhan said India is now supplying rice to overseas markets. He said the country had entered “a new era of agricultural revolution” based on high-yielding, climate-resilient seeds. Also, he credited ICAR’s All India Coordinated Projects, agricultural universities and private seed companies.

184 New Varieties Across 25 Crops

The new varieties cover cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fodder and commercial crops. Specifically, they include 122 cereal, 6 pulse and 13 oilseed varieties. In addition, there are 11 fodder, 6 sugarcane and 24 cotton varieties. Finally, the list includes one variety each of jute and tobacco.

Minister’s Directions to Officials

Chouhan told officials to take the new varieties to farmers quickly. He also said high-quality seed should reach every farmer’s field. Meanwhile, he asked farm scientists to raise pulse and oilseed output. Thus, the goal is self-sufficiency in crops where India still depends on imports.
