The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 has formally begun from Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged off the first batch from Tanakpur in Champawat district. Notably, the batch has 49 pilgrims. Moreover, it includes 34 men and 15 women, along with a doctor.
Flag-Off at Tanakpur
The flag-off took place on Sunday, 5 July 2026. Despite light rain, the weather cleared in the morning. Then, a cultural programme welcomed the pilgrims. Also, the Chief Minister greeted them with garlands and wished them a safe journey.
What the Chief Minister Said
Dhami called each pilgrim a brand ambassador of Devbhoomi’s culture. He said the yatra is not just a religious journey. Instead, it promotes spiritual awareness, cultural unity and national integration. Also, he said it helps develop border villages. Furthermore, it lets devotees experience the lifestyle of border communities.
About the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar lie in Tibet. For Hindus, Kailash is the home of Lord Shiva. Similarly, Buddhists, Jains and Bons also consider it sacred. The Ministry of External Affairs organises the yatra each year.
Route Through Uttarakhand
The yatra has two routes:
- Lipulekh Pass in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand
- Nathu La Pass in Sikkim
On the Uttarakhand route, the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) manages logistics. Notably, the yatra resumed in 2025 after a gap of about five years.
Benefits for Uttarakhand
The yatra brings pilgrims to remote border areas. As a result, local people earn from homestays, transport and services. Also, it supports the Vibrant Villages Programme in the border belt. Thus, it links faith, tourism and border development.
