Officials have issued a safety advisory for the Nanda Devi Badi Jat Yatra 2026. It follows a joint inspection of the proposed trekking route. Notably, teams from the Forest Department, Police and SDRF carried out the inspection. Their aim was to check the route’s condition, access and safety arrangements.
Route Inspection Findings
The joint team checked the route from Wan to Homkund and on to Sutol. Also, it checked the stretch from Sutol to Homkund. In total, it inspected about 32 km from Wan to Jyuragali. Similarly, it covered about 34 km from Sutol to Homkund. However, the team found several parts of the route very difficult and risky. Moreover, some stretches are prone to landslides.
Key Points of the Safety Advisory
Based on the report, District Tourism Development Officer Arvind Gaur wrote to the yatra organising committee. In brief, the advisory says:
- The route passes through remote forests and disaster-prone stops.
- Therefore, the yatra must follow the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and set safety norms.
- Areas beyond Bedni are very remote and could be especially risky.
- So, the yatra in high Himalayan areas should stay as limited as possible.
- All pilgrims should get a health check at Wan before leaving for Bedni.
Why a Health Check at Wan?
High-altitude trekking puts stress on the body. For instance, thin air can cause altitude sickness. Hence, a health check at Wan can spot pilgrims at risk early. As a result, officials can reduce the chances of emergencies on the trail.
Appeal to Pilgrims
The officer asked the organisers to strictly follow all safety, health and disaster rules. In addition, he urged pilgrims and the public to follow earlier guidelines. Above all, he asked everyone to stay alert and careful on the route.
About the Disaster Management Act, 2005
The Disaster Management Act, 2005 created a legal framework for handling disasters in India. Notably, it set up the NDMA at the national level. Likewise, it created state and district disaster management authorities. Thus, district officials can issue binding safety directions for events like this yatra.
Why the Safety Advisory Matters for UKPSC
Notably, UKPSC often links culture with disaster management. So, remember the route points: Wan, Bedni, Jyuragali, Homkund and Sutol. Also, revise the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
