The government of Uttarakhand in India is implementing a unique waste-disposal system to prevent littering the Char Dham yatra route with plastic bottles and packets. Mechanism: Visitors will scan a QR code on each plastic bottle and multi-layer plastic bag and pay a deposit over the maximum retail price, which they can claim back as a refund when they deposit the waste at a point at the end of the yatra. Impact: Last year, the pilot project saved over 1.63 lakh single-use plastic bottles from entering the fragile mountain ecosystem.
