GPS Mapping of 100 Trek Routes: Uttarakhand to Build an Offline Navigation App

Uttarakhand has started GPS and GIS mapping of 100 major trek routes and hike routes. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged off the survey team from his camp office. Notably, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board formed this team. Moreover, the team will survey each chosen route on the ground.

Why Map Trek Routes?

Uttarakhand has huge potential for adventure and trekking tourism. However, many remote trails remain little known. Therefore, the state wants to use modern technology to put them on the tourism map. As a result, trekking will become safer, easier and better organised.

The Chief Minister said tourist safety is the government’s top priority. Also, scientific mapping will give trekkers key route details. In emergencies, it will help rescue teams act faster. At the same time, the state will protect the fragile Himalayan ecology.

India’s First Offline GPS Navigation App for Treks

Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Garbyal shared the next step. Based on the mapping, the state will develop an offline and online GPS navigation app. So, trekkers can get trail details even without mobile network. Notably, Uttarakhand will become the first state in India to build such an app.

Facilities and Waste Management

During mapping, teams will also mark suitable spots for camp sites. Similarly, they will identify places for dustbins and toilets. Consequently, the state can plan facilities and better waste management on trek routes. In addition, the project will produce a DPR and a coffee table book. Thus, lesser-known treks can gain national and international attention.

Jobs for Local Youth

The Chief Minister said the project will boost tourism in remote hill areas. Furthermore, local youth will find new work as guides and homestay owners. He also asked officials to involve local people in the project.
