Uttarakhand Ranks 10th in India in GI Registrations With 29 Products

Uttarakhand ranks 10th in India in GI registrations. According to DPIIT data, the state has 29 Geographical Indication (GI) products. Notably, Uttar Pradesh leads the country with 81 GI tags. Moreover, GI tags are helping turn traditional products into global brands.

Categories of GI Products in India

India registers GI products under several categories. As of December 2025, the numbers are:

  • Handicrafts: 445 products and 27 product logos, such as Pashmina and Baluchari Saree
  • Agricultural products: 251, including spices, fruits and non-basmati rice
  • Food products: 66, such as Tirupati Laddu and Kendrapara Rasabali
  • Manufactured goods: 64, such as Kannauj Perfume and Nashik Valley Wine
  • Natural products: 5, such as Makrana Marble and Panna Diamond

Uttarakhand’s GI Products

Uttarakhand’s GI list covers crops, crafts and foods. For example, it includes Munsiyari Rajma, Berinag Tea and Almora Lakhori Mirch. Also, crafts like Aipan, Ringal craft and Tamta copperware hold GI tags. Notably, the state won a record 18 GI tags on a single day in December 2023. Recently, it also opened its first GI products gallery in Haldwani.
