The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has reviewed its Adi Vaani platform, an AI translator for tribal languages. The review came at the first Working Group on Tribal Languages meeting on 15 October 2026. Secretary Ranjana Chopra chaired the hybrid meeting. Notably, IIT Delhi develops the platform with the ministry. So, the group now aims to make Adi Vaani a national language resource.

What the Working Group Reviewed

According to the review, Adi Vaani offers text translation in nine tribal languages. Moreover, it supports speech tools, optical character recognition (OCR) and video subtitles. Also, users can search over 300 primers from Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs). In addition, TRIs have shared about 13.9 lakh sentences and 300 hours of speech data. Meanwhile, the app has crossed 48,000 Android downloads and has about 6,500 monthly users.

Next Steps for the Platform

IIT Delhi is now planning pilots. For this, it sought help with linguistic checks, spelling standards and subject vocabulary. Chopra said Adi Vaani could grow into “a comprehensive language repository.” She also stressed that community-built resources must stay under community ownership. Besides, NESTS noted that over 525 Eklavya Model Residential Schools could use it in classrooms.

How Adi Vaani Grew Since 2025

Minister of State Durgadas Uikey launched the beta version on 1 September 2025. At first, it covered Santali, Bhili, Mundari and Gondi. An IIT Delhi-led consortium built it with BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Naya Raipur. Later, on 24 August 2026, the ministry launched an upgrade at a conclave in Mysuru. That upgrade added an iOS app and five more languages. Today, the official portal says eleven languages work on it.

About Tribal Languages in India

According to Census 2011, Scheduled Tribes speak 461 tribal languages. Of these, the ministry lists 81 as vulnerable and 42 as critically endangered. Hence, it links Adi Vaani with the digital preservation of folklore and oral traditions.
