Glaw Lake Becomes India’s 101st Ramsar Site and Arunachal Pradesh’s First

India’s Ramsar network has grown to 101 sites with Glaw Lake. Notably, Glaw Lake is also the first Ramsar Site in Arunachal Pradesh. Moreover, it lies inside the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. Clearly, the listing boosts conservation in the Eastern Himalayas.

About Glaw Lake

Glaw Lake is a pristine freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas. Also, it is a biodiversity hotspot. For example, scientists have recorded more than 150 tree species around it. Similarly, they have found 49 orchid species in the lake area and its catchment. So, the lake supports a rich web of life.

About Kamlang Tiger Reserve

Kamlang Tiger Reserve lies in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. It became a tiger reserve in 2016. Furthermore, it shares borders with Namdapha National Park. Hence, the area forms a large protected landscape.

India’s Ramsar Journey

India had 26 Ramsar Sites in 2014. Now, it has 101. In other words, the number has grown nearly four times in about twelve years. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav called this a sign of India’s commitment to conservation. Also, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of Ramsar Sites in India.

What Is the Ramsar Convention?

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty to protect wetlands. It was signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. India joined it in 1982. Notably, Chilika Lake in Odisha and Keoladeo in Rajasthan were India’s first Ramsar Sites. Each year, 2 February is observed as World Wetlands Day.

Why Wetlands Matter

Wetlands store water and reduce floods. Also, they recharge groundwater and filter pollution. Furthermore, they support fish, birds and local livelihoods. Therefore, protecting them is vital for climate resilience.
