Uttarakhand held a grand state-level Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Fields Campaign) at Hawalbagh in Almora. The campaign aims to shield agriculture from the growing threat of climate change. In particular, it focuses on farm conservation, soil fertility and preparing farmers for future environmental challenges.

CM Dhami Launches Khet Bachao Abhiyan in Almora
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami attended the event as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he said that meeting farmers on the soil of Almora gives him immense energy. Moreover, he described the campaign as a people’s movement:
“The ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ is no longer just a government initiative; it has transformed into a vibrant mass movement powered by public participation.”
— Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami
Key Highlights of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan
- Millets and traditional crops: First, the event urged farmers to protect and grow more traditional millets. These include Madua (finger millet), Jhangora (barnyard millet) and Chaulai (amaranth).
- Financial backing: Next, the state government has set aside ₹200 crore in the budget to raise farmers’ income.
- Infrastructure boost: Moreover, the Chief Minister announced a fencing scheme (Tarbar Yojana) worth about ₹6 crore for Almora district. As a result, it will protect crops from wildlife.
Rebalancing Ecology and Economy
CM Dhami stressed that ecology and economy must go hand in hand. Therefore, he urged farmers to cut excessive chemical use and protect soil health. He also reminded everyone that Indian culture reveres soil as a mother.
To cope with unpredictable weather, the CM advised a three-pronged approach:
- Regular soil testing: First, understand the health of the land before planting.
- Water management: Next, use water resources judiciously and mindfully.
- Scientific alignment: Finally, choose crops and methods based on expert advice and modern research.
State Initiatives Driving Agricultural Growth
Meanwhile, the government highlighted several ongoing projects. Together, they aim to make Uttarakhand a leader in agricultural prosperity. The infographic below sums up these initiatives.

Why Khet Bachao Abhiyan Matters for UKPSC
Notably, the campaign links climate adaptation, millet promotion and human-wildlife conflict in the hills. Hence, it suits questions on Uttarakhand’s agriculture and rural economy.
