The Tiuni-Plasu hydropower project of UJVN Limited has received final forest clearance. In fact, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted it, as reported on 30 October 2026. The 72 MW project lies on the Tons river in Tiuni tehsil of Dehradun district. News reports also spell it Tyuni-Plasu. Notably, the clearance paves the way for construction to begin.
298.51 Million Units of Clean Power a Year
According to the state government, the project will generate about 298.51 million units of electricity every year. So, the project will add clean power to Uttarakhand’s grid. Moreover, officials expect it to strengthen the state’s energy security.
What CM Dhami and UJVN Said
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the clearance. He called it a significant step towards making Uttarakhand self-reliant in power. He said, “The completion of the Tyuni-Plasu hydro project will increase the State’s power generation capacity.” In addition, he said the state will use its hydropower potential while keeping environmental balance.
Similarly, UJVN Managing Director Ajay Kumar Singh called the clearance the result of long-standing efforts. He said, “UJVN Limited is committed to developing new hydropower projects in the State.”
Project Design on the Tons
Technically, the project is a run-of-the-river scheme. Its barrage sits near Tiuni, just downstream of the Tons–Pabbar confluence. Then, a power tunnel carries water to a surface powerhouse near Plasu. Further, a 2025 Environment Ministry document lists about 47.5 hectares of forest land for diversion.
About Forest Clearance in India
Projects on forest land need approval under the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980. First, the Centre grants Stage-I or in-principle approval with conditions. Then, after the user agency meets them, it grants Stage-II or final approval.
About the Tons River
Geographically, the Tons is the largest tributary of the Yamuna. It forms where the Rupin and Supin meet near Naitwar in Uttarkashi district. Later, it joins the Yamuna near Kalsi in Dehradun district.
