Two athletes from the state made Uttarakhand proud at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Notably, the Uttarakhand medalists were Unnati Sharma and Shubham Juyal. Unnati won bronze in judo. Meanwhile, Shubham won silver in para shot put.
Unnati Sharma: Bronze in Judo
Unnati Sharma comes from Dehradun. She won the bronze medal in the women’s 63 kg judo event. Remarkably, she beat South Africa’s Skye Knoester with an ippon. In fact, she ended the bout in just one minute and seven seconds. An ippon is the highest score in judo and wins the match at once.
Shubham Juyal: Silver in Para Shot Put
Shubham Juyal comes from Roorkee in Haridwar district. He won the silver medal in the men’s F57 para shot put event. His best throw measured 13.28 metres. Interestingly, he finished just behind fellow Indian Soman Rana. Thus, India took both gold and silver in this event.
What Is the F57 Category?
F57 is a para athletics class for field events. It covers athletes who compete from a seated position. Usually, these athletes have impairments affecting their legs. Hence, they throw while seated on a throwing frame.
India at CWG 2026
India finished fourth in the medal table at Glasgow 2026. Overall, it won 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze. Also, Ahmedabad will host the next Commonwealth Games in 2030.
Uttarakhand’s Sporting Rise
Uttarakhand hosted the 38th National Games in early 2025. Since then, sports facilities in the state have improved. Similarly, young athletes are getting better training. Therefore, more medals from the state look likely in future.
