Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. He completed 4,399 consecutive days in office on 10 June 2026. Notably, he went past Jawaharlal Nehru’s record by one day. Nehru had served 4,398 uninterrupted days as head of an elected government. Thus, a record from the 1950s and 1960s has now changed hands.
Modi’s Unbroken Tenure
Modi first took oath as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014. Then, he won a second term in 2019. Later, he secured a third straight term in 2024. Therefore, his time in office has run without a break for over 12 years.
How Nehru’s Record Is Counted
Nehru became Prime Minister on 15 August 1947. However, he first led an interim government. The first general elections took place in 1951–52. After that, Nehru headed an elected government from 13 May 1952. He served until his death on 27 May 1964. So, his elected tenure adds up to 4,398 days.
What About Indira Gandhi?
Indira Gandhi also had a long tenure. However, her time in office came in two spells, 1966–77 and 1980–84. She lost the 1977 election after the Emergency. Hence, her tenure was not continuous, unlike Modi’s.
Reactions to the Milestone
The Union Cabinet honoured the Prime Minister on the record. Meanwhile, several world leaders sent greetings. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called him “the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the history of India.” Kenyan President William Ruto also praised the trust placed in him.
